Frequently Asked Questions
What can I expect from a meeting?
Usually there is a bit of free time to socialize and meet new people at the beginning of each meeting. At the new moms meeting, you'll get a chance to share when you're due or how old your multiples are, what kind you have, and where you live. You will be able to ask all of your burning questions answered by other moms who have been there. Before the general meeting, there is time allowed to chat with other members while enjoying a snack or beverage. Then we sit down and hear about any club business that needs to be mentioned before we enjoy our featured activity for the evening. Some of them include a speaker pertinent to our lives with multiples, but sometimes we do other fun things like wine tastings, or game night.
I am expecting twins, but they are not born yet. Can I still get involved?
Absolutely! Expectant members are encouraged to get involved with the club early! Expectant members do not pay dues for 6 months, but get full club benefits including all meetings, socials, newsletter, and member shopping at the sales. Becoming involved as an expectant mom will help answer questions and alleviate fears about parenting infant multiples. Expectant members can communicate with the New & Expectant Co-Chairs. Monthly discussions and socials are help for new and expectant moms too.
Can you help me meet moms who live nearby?
Yes! We want you to connect with people who can help you through the hard times, and it's best if they live close and/or have similar situations. A complete club roster and member contact information is available in the Big Tent system. We also have a closed Facebook group page that our group communicates through. As a member you can log in to Big Tent and locate moms who live near you, have multiples similar ages, or have pregnancy/parenting issues similar to yours.
How much is membership?
Membership for expectant moms is free for six months. Dues for new members and renewing members are $36.00 for a full year and include $10.00 dues paid to NOMOTC. Dues for members joining mid year (between March 1 and August 1) are only $16.00. Dues for long term members, whose multiples are over the age of 10, are $20.00. Membership is free for Honorary members who have more than one set of multiples, triplets, quadruplets, or higher order multiples.
Can I consign at the sale even if I'm not a member?
If you know a member, you can consign under that member.
Can my husband join?
Membership in FCMOM is limited to mothers, grandmothers, legal guardians, and expectant mothers of multiples. Husbands do not join as paid members but frequently participate in the weekend family parties and picnics, work at volunteers for set-up and break-down at the consignment sales, and attend weekend playgroup activities. Expectant fathers are welcome and occasionally attend the monthly New & Expectant Moms' meetings from 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm.
Can I bring my babies/children to the meetings?
FCMOM meetings are intended to be a break for mothers to get out and enjoy camaraderie and emotional support. Sleeping and breast-feeding infants occasionally accompany mothers to the New & Expectant Moms' meetings from 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm. However infants that are crying loudly and disrupting the discussion will be asked to step outside. Infants are welcome at New & Expectant Moms' Socials (various meeting times, locations). Infants and children do not attend the monthly General Meetings, however several daytime and weekend playgroups and parent/children activities are planned throughout the month.
Are there activities for my children?
There are several playgroups scheduled each month for various age groups. These are held at various locations including people's homes, area parks and playgrounds, children's concerts, indoor children's gyms, nature museums, stroller trails, and perennial favorites such as farms, the zoo, and seasonal festivals. In addition, four large family events are held each year - usually a Summer Picnic, Halloween Party, Egg Hunt, and Spring Carnival.
Can I join FCMOM mid-year?
Yes! Members are accepted year-round. Special, reduced half-year dues are collected for those who join after March 1. The membership year runs from September 1 - August 31 annually.
Do I have to live in Fairfax County to be a member?
Residency in Fairfax County is not a requirement of membership. Nearly 10% of members live outside of Fairfax in adjacent counties of Prince William, Arlington, Loudoun, Stafford, or in Washington, DC.
I am an honorary member (with triplets, quads, or more than 1 set of twins). Do I have to re-apply each year?
Honorary members do not pay annual dues but are required to re-apply to FCMOM each year to confirm their interest and update all of their contact information and membership data.
I belong to another NOMOTC-affiliated club. Do I have to pay national dues through FCMOM also?
Yes, a new NOMOTC rule in 2007 required clubs to pay national dues for all regular members regardless of their enrollment in another club.
Are monetary donations to FCMOM tax deductible?
Yes, Fairfax County Mothers of Multiples and National Organization of Mothers of Twins Clubs (NOMOTC) are considered by the IRS to be a non-profit 501(c)(3) organizations funded by dues, donations and grants. Charitable donations to FCMOM are usually tax-deductible, however members and community donors should consult their tax advisors.
What keeps FCMOM going?
FCMOM is a volunteer organization. There is no paid staff. The club is what we make of it. If no one volunteers to chair a particular program, that program ceases to exist. Besides being essential to the club, volunteering is fun and a great way to meet people. Sometimes it can be a great excuse to get away from the kids, an opportunity to feel productive at home, or a way to include the kids and the family. Often, new families of multiples are overwhelmed in the first year or two, but are then able to give back as their multiples get older. To learn more about opportunities to volunteer, participate, & contribute to the club, please email your interests and/or availability.
